Karmin’s fame rose earlier this year after their cover of Chris Brown’s ‘Look At Me Now’ went viral in April. With over 41 million hits to date, the video stand as one of the most talked about clips of the year.

I posted earlier that the group was signed by LA Reid, and they’ve been working their debut album since. Even though their youtube channel includes some original music it’s hard for me to predict the direction of their album. Under LA Reids direction, I could see the urban-pop appeal being the stand out aspect their debut, especially since they have reportedly teamed up with Tricky Stewart and The Runners.

Karmin is without a doubt talented and I love all of their videos, but imagining them on a larger scales risks losing their charm for me. This is why it’s smart for them to continue their cover videos. It will keep their fans close, and show the world that they are still grounded. I really want to love them, so I hope my initial fears are just hot air.

According to the videos description, their first single is due in two weeks. So thankfully we won’t have to wait to long to find out what they have in store.

That being said, their cover of ‘No Scrubs’ is sick. They made it their own, without losing the swag of the original.

Sidenote: I feel like a different record is being broken every week this year. With each broken record comes the realization that we are in a changing industry. But what’s more admirable that the broken record is the person who originally set it. You need to consider that fact that most of these records were set in a time with no digital records, and that makes a huge difference.

With that being said heres the list:

• Rihanna made history this week as her single, ‘We Found Love’, becomes her 20th Top 10 single. Rihanna achieved the feat in six years and four months, which beats Madonna previous record of six years and nine months.
• Adele reclaims the top spot on the Hot 100 with ‘Someone Like You’, which is growing rapidly on the radio.
• B.o.B. scores a top 10 debut as his brand new single ‘Strange Clouds’ debuts at number 7. The song, which is the first single from his sophomore album features Lil Wayne and was produced by Dr. Luke. Dr. Luke really has the golden touch.
• Lil Wayne scores another number 1 on the R&B chart as ‘She Will’ advances to number 1. Drake, who is featured on the song is also sitting at number 2 with ‘Headlines’.
• Blink 182 blast on the album chart at number 2 with 151,000. The last time they were on on the chart with a original album was in 2005 with their album, Blink 182. Considering that the band has not made a huge impact with any singles with this album, I’d say they had a solid first week.
• J. Cole is the victor this week selling 218,000 copies of his debut album.

The album is currently scheduled to hits stores on November 21st, same day as Michael  Jackson’s Immortal and Rihanna’s Talk That Talk. Up until this point Mary has yet to deliver a hit single from the album. She is at a point in her career where here fan following is strong enough to deliver the first week numbers, but it would still be in her best interest to deliver a strong single to advance her radio presence.

I have a feeling that this won’t be the smash album that it’s being hyped up to be. I think that the R&B/Urban fans will love it. Her sound so far is staying true to who she is, so for that reason I’m excited about the album. But I don’t know if it will have a crossover effect to pop radio. But maybe she doesn’t want that.

Mary is one of the only R&B stars that has stayed true to the genre and been successful. Think about ‘Be Without You’, or ‘Just Fine’. She was able to deliver R&B crossover singles before, but her last album, Stronger With Each Tear, failed to do so.

Like I said, maybe she wants to only appeal to the R&B fans, which would be refreshing considering that fact that most R&B acts abandoned the genre for dance-pop.

Still, the race to hit no. 1 on Nov. 21 is strong, and it will be interesting to see who comes out on top.

I understood why Taylor and Nicki performed ‘Superbass’ a few weeks ago because if it wasn’t for Taylor the son would have never blown up. But this is too much. Just further proof that T.I. and Usher are slowly losing it.

Also, does this mean that Taylor is going to dabble in the urban music scene? I hope not.

The internet is going wild because she flaunts her baby bump in the clip, which means she filmed this recently. What I don’t understand is where the video to ‘Party’ went.She filmed the before this so why has it not been released?

‘Countdown’ has yet to do any significant action on the charts, which is the only reason why I think the video is being released so early. She should’ve have had a campaign leading up to the videos release, but a preview is goo publicity as well.

I’m going to wait and see the video in its entirety, but I’d like to hear what you think.Excited? Disappointed?

Thoughts….

It’s real simple. Adele walks around looking sad. It’s in black and white. The camera pans around quickly. Adele looks sad again while pensively looking out to the water. She walks and looks sad.

While some people are tearing the video apart saying that they would’ve rather not had one, I say it was smart. Sure, ‘Someone Like You’ was a worldwide smash before any official video (Even though the BRIT performance counted as one), but with the song impact the US a video is bound to expand its popularity. Plus, the song is rising on the radio, so an extra push of downloads may throw the song back into the penthouse where it belongs.

It’s mind blowing that Adele has only released 2 singles in the US in 9 months and sold over 3 million copies. That’s not even comparable to the success she has had worldwide though, where she has sold about 7 millions copies, 10 million total. It just goes to show you that talent is not dead, record sales are not dead, and have a wide appeal makes all the difference.

What other artist has both 9 and 65 years olds buying there music?

The albums third single, ‘Set Fire to the Rain’, is actually her most “mainstream” song on 21 so I cant even begin to imagine how much she is going to slay the US with that one.

What do you think of the video?

I have to say that I am surprised with Cole’s numbers, mainly because he does not have the radio support that other artists do. The last solo act to debut at number 1 with their first album was B.o.B. He only sold 84,000 copies, which is odd considering he had a number 1 song on the radio. 84,000 copies is pretty sad when you consider all of the mainstream attention he was getting. Meanwhile, Cole seems to be on the sideline (pun intended), yet still will debut at number.

What gives?

There a few reason why I think this happened, but mainly it’s his association with Jay-Z. There have been artist before who have been co-signed by Jay-Z, but not like this. Jay made it clear that Cole was his project, a protege, and when you have the hip-hop royalty singing you praises all day people are going to notice, especially the blogs. I’d argue that one of the main reasons Cole is selling is due to blogs.

Every blog I read was telling me how good he was even before I heard a song. With the blog already implanting ideas into their readers, Cole seemed destined to succeed. “Work Out” was a great first single, and I wish that it would’ve received more airplay, but it seems that sales aren’t reflecting the singles success. Whether or not the album will have longevity, its clear that Cole has made an initial impression, something that most artist fail to do.

• Tony Bennett scores his first number 1 album this week as Duets II sells 179,000 copies. What makes the news even more interesting is the fact that Bennett is now the oldest artist to have a number 1 album at the age of 85. Duets II features Lady Gaga, Mariah Carey, and the late Amy Winehouse, so it’s no surprise that the album reached the penthouse this week.
• This is the 18th week that year-to-date albums sale is greater than it was this time last year. In a failing industry this is huge news.
• 931.37 million digitals tracks have been sold so far this year. Itunes deserves a round of applause.
• Rihanna new song “We Found Love” debuts at 16 on the Hot 100. This charting is based off of 4 days of sales and radio play.
• LMFAO scores there second top 10 this year with “Sexy and I Know”. I still am in disbelief that they have found the success they have this year, but I’m not hating. *cue “Party Rock Anthem”
• Glee took over the Hot 100 debuts this week, but then again, who cares?
• Maroon 5 and Christina are still number 1, though Adele is coming for them fast.
